Landscape and wildlife artist John Potter was raised in the Great Lakes Country, growing up with an abiding love for the natural world among the lakes, rivers and forests of the Northwoods. He discovered a passion for drawing and painting at a very early age, and went on to graduate from Utah State University with an Art Degree emphasizing Painting and Illustration. Potter spent 20 years as an award-winning illustrator and graphic artist in Montana before turning his attention to fine art on a full time basis.

Potter has exhibited his work in shows throughout the U.S., including the Society of Animal Artists Annual Exhibit, The Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction, The Salmagundi Club in NYC, and the Western Visions Miniature Show at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. This year he will also show as a Guest Artist in the Northwest Rendezvous Group’s Western Rendezvous of Art, in Helena, and the Buffalo Bill Show and Sale in Cody.

He paints en plein air and works to achieve visual harmonies in light and color. Working directly from nature, he believes in the all-pervading divinity of the natural world, and is always striving for an honest expression of the way light reveals beauty to his eyes and heart. John spends many hours in the field, observing and studying light, mood, and the ever-changing effects of atmosphere on the land. He carries paints and a sketchbook wherever he goes, and he travels extensively – yet his favorite subjects remain the rugged mountain scenery of the American West.

He says, “When I step outside to paint, my intent is to orchestrate a moment of light, color, and my own emotional responses to those subjects on canvas. My hope is that the viewer will see the natural world through my eyes, and gain an appreciation for the quiet dignity that I find in the wild - perhaps even feel that sense of awe and gratitude as well – and hopefully, then, share a desire to help preserve this Earth that belongs to us all.”

Potter is represented by Mountain Trails Gallery, Jackson and Cody, WY, and Sedona, AZ; Village Arts of Putney, Putney, VT; The Depot Gallery, Red Lodge, MT; and Wild Spirit Gallery, Pagosa Springs, CO.

He is a member of the Salmagundi Club, the Society of Animal Artists, the Putney Painters (VT), and a Signature Member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters (RMPAP).

He and his wife, Janet, divide their time between homes in Vermont and Montana.
